Today started badly, suffering from a virus that had knocked me out but fell out of bed determined to photograph the bridge today. San Francisco was covered in cold fog and the prospects of getting anything was very low but I decided to pull the whole family out for the excursion. We arrived in dense fog on Conzelman road, on the pacific side of SF, North of the golden gate bridge.... hardly able to see in front of our noses but our patience paid off and gradually the fog lifted. The fog grew and abated over the next 2 hours finally and I was treated to one of the best foggy sunsets I have ever seen at the Golden gate bridge. This is a composite of three images stitched to a Panorama using CS5. It's still a bit rough and ready after processing this evening but I'll show you what I've done so far.

Televised egg at the MOMA

This televised egg at the SF Museum of modern art was another exhibit that drew my attention. The artist is Nam June Paik
So whats it all about? well I could make something up.. here goes..for me I found the simple act of capturing this object on the screen conferred importance on the subject and made me consider it as an asthetic object and to study the visual qualities of it more closely. The repetition of its display emphasized this effect even more. It emphasises the importance of Tv in our society and it's importance in contributing to visual art.. Does that sound convincing? Anyway it makes me think why is the medium of TV so powerful, will it be superseded .. Maybe one day we will have brain connections to visual input independently of our eyes?

Lunch break by Sharon Lockhart

Another exhibit that I found very striking at the Museum of Modern art was 'Lunch break' by Sharon Lockhart. Lockhart explores the tradition of documentary photography, recently documenting the life in a new York Shipyard. The image I show here is from a slow motion film that appears like a series of photographs where Lockhart travels past a long row of workers during their lunch break. It has a hypnotising quality and the audio of the low drumming of the factory adds to the intensity. Harry my son was captivated by the installation.

Francessa Woodman at the MOMA

During my visit to California I visited the Museum of Modern art in San Francisco. I was really pleased to see that work by Francessca Woodman was being exhibited. She was such a creative photographer, predominantly using her own body as her subject.. I wouldn't call them self portraits myself. I found her Diazotypes very beautiful, a much more painterly effect created during the long exposure of the negative onto paper. I audaciously put myself into the picture! sharing a moment of the exhibition. Tragically Woodman died at 22 when she took her own life, difficulty in obtaining funding for her work was suggested to be a strong contributor.

I have never visited Dante's point in Death Valley so thought it was about time I tried to make some images up there. It is a stunning location, affording breath taking views of the mountain ranges.My guide book suggested that Dantes point would be really windy but it was unusually calm and with a coat and hat I was warm as toast.
I met up with landscape photographer Steve Seiren over dinner the night before at the furnace creek ranch and he suggested I explore the area well to find some foreground interest. After a really good hike along the ridge I found some rocks that grabbed my attention. Maybe I shouldn't mention that I walked for 10 minutes along rough paths with my rucksack and tripod but then realised that I had left my camera in the car..and had to go back for it. By the time I got back to the location, the light was almost gone, but there was still a beautiful glow on the rocks and plants. Twilight is a favourite time for me.

'Les Braves', a memorial on the Omhah beach to the soldiers that lost their lives on the D Day landings. This scultpure made in 2004 by Anilore Banon commemorates the Americans who gave their lives to liberate France.

I'm on the coast of Normandy this week,exploring the D day beaches. I/m staying at Arromanches, also known as the 'Gold' beach in operation Overlord. It was landed by the British, in 1944. This coastline is fascinating and steeped in history and rememberance of WW II. The large concrete structures that formed the temporary floating harbor are still here and I focused on one of these units tonight.

The huge crumbling concrete structures that were used to make the temporary harbour in arromanache duirng world war II are wonderful subjects. I was drawn to the people that explored these amazing structures and the sunlight illuminated them beautifully. I positioned the mother and child in the frame as the main subjects ( they didn't notice as the wide angle can be deceptive) and waited for the right moment to capture. This image ended up looking rather surreal, with the girl surrendering with her arms in the air and the distant couple shooting snaps on the beach. The positioning of the couple in the right hand corner was a blend from an image captured a few seconds before using the same camera position. I like to make mutiple images in this way, you can then choose differnt subjects to populate the scene.

Taken in the Cloisters in the Le Mont St Michelle. The figure on the top left for me is a interesting counterpoint to the main figure. I had a number of shots i could blend together as I was shooting multiple images on the tripod with the only variation being the figures that moved around the scene. I think the small but brightly lit figure works really well with the primary figure and the lit window on the right. I also like the feeling of movement with the distant figure too.

I spotted this location on my previous visit into town and was very drawn to the colour and composition of this scene. I liked the dark backdrop to this aperture giving sense of simplicity to the portrait.
Left the hipsta 'app' behind and used the iphone as a straight camera as I wanted things pretty straight as I saw them. Vermeer eat your heart out!

A wonderful blustery day on Holkham beach wth family and friends. The sky and light was amazing, dark threatening clouds with shafts of bright sun light. A typical british seaside and hopefully the images convey that.

Goodbye to Suzy

It was a sad but memorable day today, celebrating the extraordinary life of Suzy oakes who had recently lost her fight with cancer. The service at cambridge crematorium was really lovely with thoughtful words contributed by family and friends. Beautiful music played on the harp by Eliane Pamphilon (playing Debussy's Arabesque no 1 that pulled at the heart strings and a wonderful treatment of 'A nightingale sang in Berkeley square' which was Suzy and Steves 'song'). We went on to Kings college for a reception in the chapel and I captured a few images during the event. A beautiful sunny summer evening with the backdrop of Kings college lawns, I am sure Suzy would have approved. Suzy contributed so much to the Mill Road community she was be very sadly missed by many.

Wicken cycle ride

On a early sunday morning bike ride to The fenland village of Wicken fen, I found this rather disturbing tribute. Toys nailed to a tree. Reading the message it became apparent that this rather macabre scene was a memorial to a child that had been killed at the roadside. It seemed so strange considering the lane was a one way bumpy poorly maintained road with passing places, to imagine the story behind this sad event seemed impossible.
There's something about the fens that I sometimes find unsettling and I can't put my finger on it.. this seems to fuel the fire of my disquiet.

Its a bit of a bleak walk beside the guided bus route towards the new MRC building. The grey morning accenuated the feeling. These desolate fields are destined for further development and the empty spaces seem to drift endlessly into the distance.

The rape seed plants appear dead in the dusty fields and the mechanical harvestors are devouring the bleached white skeletons. While avoiding being impaled in the ankles by the sharp stumps of the beheaded plants that were on the perimeter I took a few images of the plants still remaining.

We had heard stories that there was an old air raid shelter in the village. Harry and I went exploring and found the Anderson shelter, old and broken down, obscured by a blanket of very striking blue perenials. I also took a shot of the covered car nearby as it also seemed secret and mysterious.

Hanging around Milton while taking Harry to his class. I spent some time exploring the pedestrian bridge looking at potential images. The light was really interesting, the sun was shining perpendicular to the bridge illuminating the structural features and bright white and dark stormy clouds shuffled for space in the evening sky.

I had a walk in the abbey gardens after tidying the house after Harry's party.. peace and quiet alone.. rain and sun were intermingled providing interesting shadows. I took some on the proper camera after scouting some shots with the iphone. I've come to realize that I hate the 35 mm aspect ratio, when I swapped over to the G10 for my image scouting I loved the 5x4 aspect ratio and I find the square aspect ratio interesting as well, I just hate the skinny width of the 35mm sensor. Will post my SLR shots later.

I went to the 2 counties motor show today and took a few snaps which I put together for a blub book for my colleague who runs the classic car part of the show. Its all done in aid of the Lyon's charities. The people were a blast to meet, very friendly and very willing to tell you all their stories. I loved the colours and shapes. Love the colour palette here of red and green. Its a striking combination to work with and the added shadows were a bonus. The trick was not being run over by a passing car while I was taking it. By the way the sign post is interestingly wonky not me!

Time out from the bench

Took some time out from the lab bench for a cappuccino and sat on a more rustic bench talking to my friend Stef. I had to get out as I was getting stressed at work and didn't want to lose my rag. After a discussion about this that and the other, it was safe to make a return. Stef thinks i need a direction to follow with my photography. Ho hum. Despite that shot across the bows, I still had enough impetus to make this image using my new iphone hipstomatic 'app'. Its good though that your friends can be candid with you.. who needs a sycophant!

New find

On returning to work this morning I looked at the places I visited with my iphone, so much was different, harsher light, the place full of people coming and going from the bustop, all the leaves squashed into the pavement and the small silvery branches that had lain on the dark tarmac were nowhere to be seen. I did however notice these little mushrooms sitting in a flower bed and I spent a few minutes making some snaps with my iphone. They were so beautiful and delicate, poking their heads up above the the regimented rows of blue lobelia.

I feel a bit like Dorothy in the wizard of Oz.. what I was looking for was on my back door all the time. On a short walk to work I became distracted by the prosaic subjects in front of me, they were taunting me to photograph them. I took my iphone in hand and spent the next couple of hours exploring my local environment.
I gave myself the time to look and became absorbed in the pictures infront of me. If you stand still, the world seems to move around you.

Ascension Burial ground

I needed an antidote to the summer sun and jolly colour of Santorini, an injection of a darker mood: so a visit to the Ascension burial ground in Cambridge was in order. A famous cemetery containing the graves of Wittgenstein and other famous cambridge professors. What I like about this site is the rather wild, unkempt feeling of the place and the image of the 'Rose' sums up the atmosphere for me. Taken with my 45 mm Tilt shift lens which never usually gets taken out of the bag, but I thought some soft focus would help the other-worldly feeling of the images.

A change of scene for me, to the warmer climes of Santorini. I found it very different from the wild coastal landscapes that I tend to shoot. Lots of bold colour, interesting angles and architecture. Maybe a little too touristy for my tastes. Clive Minett lead the tour and was a inspirational photographer. Thanks v much to Clive for putting up with me. I found this organised trip quite difficult on a number of occasions when I was dying to get out and photograph in good light and was asked to be sociable instead. I soon realised where my priorities lay, behind the lens of my camera and not infront of a plate of spaghetti.

Jayne Odell and myself visited Harlow to see a regional photographic exhibition.
Following a capuccino and a muffin and a discussion about photography and the meaning of life, our attention turned to the potential of the photographic subjects around us. Armed with compact cameras and less than an hour before our parking ticket expired, we set out to capture a slice of Harlow life on our camera sensors for half and hour. La Grand Trianon

Taken in the palace of Versailles, I was really drawn to the floor patterns and I enjoyed the people that populated the scene. In particular in this image I have a gathering of men, of all ages, playing all sorts of different roles. The grandfather and child were present all the time I was shooting but when the male couple came into the scene, it really came together. I had quite a lot of time to think about the main design of the image so was very careful to make sure that the light was hanging centrally and matched up with the mid line of the door at the back. Thanks to David Clapp for making me think about lines like these in cathedrals in poarticular. Im not fussed about the blown highlights, I do have a composite wiht a darker exposure I could use, but prefer the high key effect.
Black and white conversion to focus on tone, as the colour story wasnt important.

Harlow

So I spent under an hour photographing Harlow with my compact camera after a visit to the East Anglian Federation of photographers to see my accepted prints in context. This is the result of my endevours, I decided to transform to a grainy black and white to make up for the rather difficult lighting and give a bit of contrast to the images. (if you can't beat em join them.. bit of a private joke but I saw a numnber of very average images given the grainy treatment that were accepted into the exhibtion)

Birthday tulips for my husband, I put these on a white card background. Nothing fancy, a bit of flower arranging by yours truely and a black and white conversion. Of course nothing like the tulip studies of John Blakemore..Its tempting to do something a bit more creative. In my study where I do my printing and photoshop work I have two beautiful original Blakemore prints of tulip studies from his tulipmania series. Isn't it ironic that I have two classic darkroom prints as an inspiration!

Jeune Homme by Hippolyte Flandrin

Stumbled upon this painting in the louvre, the lighting was beautiful and the pose simple with beautiful lines. Apparently this is one of Flandrin's best-known works but was painted early in his career. The skin glowed on the canvas, something to emulate but where do I find the model?

I was drawn to this piece in the Pompidou centre by Oliver Mourgue set against the backdrop of a design by Jean-Philippe Lenclos. Very dramatic use of colour. The flat figure shown here was made in 1970, apparently from that time bold colour was increasingly being used in the work places in france to enrich the work environment. I am not sure I could cope with looking at this strking colour all day! The 70s were a strange time but 70s art and fashion is making a come back. I saw a lime green crocheted jump suit in a shop window in Brighton last week and wondered if I had gone though a time warp.

La Defence is a pretty weird place.. fancy walking to work in this landscape every day. I sat on the steps looking down at the scene and kept the camera still and collected business men to fit into a composite that I planned to construct later. The result of my blends is shown first in this series. I also liked this image of Harry and the business man. Is he looking back at his childhood?!

Pompidou Centre. Exploration of sound

Exploring the mirrors and sounds that are created by my interaction with a sculptural peice by Jim Hodges. People came into view within the mirrors, disembodied arms and faces. Weird electronic noises buzzed off the moving mirrors and reflected off the walls.

Marie Antionette had her own house in Versailles called the Petit Trianon. I found this chapel, it was really simple, bright and white with the red chairs contrasting beautifully, I couldn't reisist taking the image with a fish eye lens

I made this portrait under the 'Grand Arch' in the financial district of Paris. Many tourists are drawn to this interesting location, the architecture is refreshingly different. The girl was posing for her boyfriend and I asked if I could take some shots with her reflection in the plate glass.

I liked the pose of the girl in the hyacyinth garden, I was trying to find something different, normally I am hunting for the cute shot, these illustrate more the awkwardness of youth. I think I could extend this idea of the hands over the face on different children to demonstrate how inaccessible child photography now appears as the hysteria of child safety increases.

New Blurb book

I've just put together a 'Blurb' book using photographs that I made in Atlanta last November. During a lull in the rheumatology conference I spent an afternoon on street corners watching the world go by. Taken on my high end compact camera (canon G10) as I don't take anything larger on business trips. The harsh lighting was my inspiration here.

The periphery of the frame

I am drawn to surreal ideas in photography without resorting to photoshop. I also like to play around with objects on the periphery of the frame. Elements crossing this border seem to have potent effects. Our brains try and make sense of the world and I want to work against that. Here I was also exploring the scale relationships of objects and trying to confuse them. I was sat here after a cup of coffee snapping away, the lady in front obligingly kept her foot up for me (she didn't ask why) while I waited for something interesting to cross my path. I would like to find a more reflective table that makes more of the sky on the table, fluffier white clouds in a deep blue sky would work even better. If you see some mad woman wondering around a seafront with a white jug, you will know who it is!
